Bone Grafts

Losing a tooth can lead to further bone loss in your jaw, but the team at Creating Smiles Dental, led by Cindy Brayer DMD, PA, and Phong Phane, DMD, offers bone grafting to preserve your healthy jaw bone. A bone graft refers to a procedure where we take bone from another area and fuse it with the part of your jaw where bone has been lost or where it might need some extra support. It can also be necessary if you are having an implant put in, to help support the implant. Protect the health of your smile today by calling the practice at either location in St. Petersburg or Clearwater, Florida, or requesting a consultation online.

Bone Grafts Q&A

Your natural teeth are embedded in your jaw bone, which is stimulated when you bite and chew. This regular stimulation of your jaw bone preserves bone density so it can support your teeth and facial tissue.

When you’re missing teeth, your jaw bone doesn’t get the stimulation it needs. The bone begins to break down and may start to get brittle and atrophy if left untreated.

Tooth loss isn’t the only cause of bone loss. Other reasons include:

  • Unanchored dentures or bridges
  • Periodontal diseases
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Facial trauma
  • Developmental conditions

The amount of bone loss and the rate at which it’s lost varies significantly from person to person. For instance, in the case of extractions, it’s important to act quickly to preserve the bone surrounding the roots of your teeth, especially if you plan on getting a dental implant.

A bone graft at Creating Smiles Dental helps to replace lost bone for socket preservation and, in conjunction with an implant, grow new healthy bone.

When your jaw bone atrophies, or decays, the remaining bone may be of poor quality. It may not be strong enough to support a dental implant, or reduce your ability to chew properly.

Bone grafting is a process that can help grow new bone of sufficient quality to support a dental implant that’s the proper length and width. It’s also helpful when treating certain cases of facial trauma, or combatting the effects of periodontal disease that has weakened your bone tissue.

Bone grafting also restores your ability to use your teeth and gives you back your natural-looking smile.

First, your provider at Creating Smiles Dental will take X-rays of your mouth to examine the health of your jawbone. If your dentist concludes that you may need more support for implants, you’ll start off with an appointment for extraction (if needed), along with the bone graft procedure. After your dentist at Creating Smiles Dental removes a tooth, they fill the socket left behind with an allograft bone graft material.

During the healing process, the surrounding tissue and cells will migrate into this socket, remodeling this material into bone tissue to promote growth. This creates the structure and support necessary for your dentist to place the dental implant once you’ve fully healed.

If you’ve experienced any tooth loss or are planning for implants, a bone graft procedure may be necessary. To make sure you’re in good hands, call the experts at Creating Smiles Dental for your appointment or request one online today.
