The great Louis Armstrong once sang, “When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you.” For many people, their smile sparks a sense of joy and confidence that not only affects their own outlook but that of the people around them. For others, however, it can be a source of anxiety and self-consciousness. Our own Dr. Cindy Brayer and Tiffany Fager recently sat down with Bloom’s Danny New to talk about how something as simple as a smile can impact our whole demeanor and what you can do if you are unhappy with your smile.
How Your Smile Affects Your Mood and Self-Image
Tiffany has worked side by side with Dr. Brayer for over 16 years as a dental hygienist and has seen firsthand the incredible impact that the quality of a patient’s smile can have on their lives.
“I have seen many patients come into our office embarrassed to smile because they are not happy with the look of their teeth for many different reasons. But after we help fix their teeth, they are so much more confident and want to smile more to show off their pearly whites! A smile makeover transforms not only their smile, but their whole demeanor becomes much more positive and cheerful too.”
In addition to being a dental hygienist, Tiffany is also a professional photographer and noted how self-conscious her clients can be when they aren’t happy with their smiles.
“As a photographer, I often see my clients laugh with me on the walk to our photo location but the minute I take my lens cap off, they dim their smiles because they’re self-conscious about something. [They] are embarrassed about one part of their smile when I get up close and look at their teeth. I tell them that I can fix their photos with Photoshop and give them their ideal smile on these pictures, so they do not have to be self-conscious during the photoshoot.”
“Here’s an example of a before and after. I fixed it with Photoshop almost as good as Dr. Brayer could do in real life. I look at teeth for a living, so I can do a pretty natural job in Photoshop. But it makes me sad to think that she can’t smile in normal selfies with friends. She told me she deletes all photos where it shows. So as a hygienist, I told her that she can come in to see Dr. Brayer and Dr. Phane and they can fix it permanently so she will be able to smile without hesitation. She didn’t know it could be that easy so she is coming in this week for her free consultation!”
Fixing Your Smile with a Smile Makeover
For patients who are unhappy with or self-conscious about their smile, Dr. Brayer offers several dental procedures that can enhance and transform their smile to one that they can’t wait to show off.
If your gums and teeth are healthy but are discolored or stained, then professional teeth-whitening treatment is your best bet to get whiter teeth quickly. We offer both in-home and in-office teeth whitening, both of which will give you noticeably a brighter smile fast. Be careful about eating and drinking darker staining items, though, as they can quickly darken your new pearly whites.
For patients whose teeth are not quite straight, Dr. Brayer recommends Accelerated Invisalign, which can straighten your teeth and help transform your smile dramatically without all the metal and wires associated with traditional braces. This patient finished her Accelerated Invisalign treatment in just six months and you can see what a difference it makes in the straightness and evenness of her smile.
Veneers and Componeers
If your teeth do not appear uniform in shade, or you have chipping, staining, and gaps, veneers can cover those imperfections and give you the kind of smile you’ve always dreamed of having. Dr. Brayer offers two types of veneers – Componeers and porcelain veneers.
- Componeers are composite veneers that bond directly on top of the patient’s existing teeth without harming the tooth structure. If the patient ever decides they want to remove the Componeers, they can be smoothed right off.
- Porcelain veneers are the more traditional veneers and, while they look beautiful, often the tooth structure will need to be altered to make room for the veneers.
If you are missing teeth, you will not feel joyful when you smile. Dental implants are a great option to replace missing teeth and restore your smile. Dr. Brayer offers both single implants, for when one tooth is missing, and implant bridges, which can replace multiple missing teeth.
